Material Handler Job Description & Salary

A Material Handler is generally working in a Distribution Center and assists in the effective operation of the distribution center. The materials department in an organization is responsible for the total supply chain of materials and goods. The position of a material handler within a company is highly regulated and requires a lot of integrity of the individual on this position. In some companies the material handler is required to deliver confidential goods to departments. What is the responsibility of a Material Handler? The Material Handler is working in shipping, receiving and delivery of goods and the primary responsibilities of a Material Handler are; •Handling of all stock items in the warehouse of the company with the use of transport and lifting equipment •Receiving of deliveries into the warehouse and checking of the associated paperwork •Filing orders that are received from the departments •Cash handling •Loading and unloading of trucks with the use of transport and lifting equipment •Basic accounting duties to compare bills with invoices and clearance activities The Material Handler must ensure that all materials in the warehouse are accounted for and stored in the appropriate areas. This is a very important task which is controlled by accountants. What education does a Material Handler need? A Material Handler requires at least a high school diploma and a valid driving license. Also a license to operate Hi-Low equipment and forklifts is necessary if he works in a warehouse with high storage and large goods. The Material Handler has to have computer skills to prepare reports and handle the storage software. In case the warehouse contains dangerous and hazardous goods, the Material Handler requires additional HAVOC training. Additionally the Material Handler requires skills in record keeping, safe working, heavy lifting and education of other employees in the warehouse. Health and Safety In some warehouses heavy lifting is required and this will have an impact on the health of the Material Handlers. Training alone is not enough and will not prevent possible injuries to back and knees of the Material Handler. Material Handler salaries The average salary of a Material Handler in the United States is between $26,000 and $30,000 per year and this will vary, depending on the size of the warehouse and the type of materials that are handled there. In warehouses with dangerous goods the salary will be higher. Material Handler careers An experienced Material Handler can become a Warehouse Supervisor, Store Manager or Supply Chain Manager.
